A Week at Waterloo - Diary of Lady Magdalene de Lancey
Published by CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (2015)
This is one for the ladies. Magdelene married de Lancy, Wellington’s chief of staff, just before the battle and nursed her wounded husband for a week after the event until he died. They were clearly very much in love, and being the educated daughter of an Edinburgh surgeon, she was under no delusions as to his condition. What emerges is a loving, heart-rending and tragic account of their last week together as he drifted between life and death, and she between hope and despair. A short read (50 pages) but unputdownable. Get the Reportage Press version which fleshes out the diary with an introduction by Andrew Roberts and post-scripts by Walter Scott and Charles Dickens – both of whom were deeply moved by the diary.
