Colonel (retd) John H. Gill (Jack) is a military historian specialising in the Napoleonic period. His publications include With Eagles to Glory: Napoleon and His German Allies in the 1809 Campaign, the ground-breaking trilogy 1809 Thunder on the Danube: Napoleon’s Defeat of the Habsburgs (2008–10) and The Battle of Znaim: Napoleon, the Habsburgs and the end of the War of 1809 (2020). His most recent work is Broken Eagles: Napoleon’s German Allies in the Campaigns of 1813 (2025). He has also contributed chapters to edited volumes such as Napoleon and the Operational Art of War (2021) and The Cambridge History of the Napoleonic Wars (2023).
