Colonel Professor Matthias Strohn, M.St. (Oxon), DPhil. (Oxon), FRHistS
Head of Historical Analysis at the Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research (CHACR)
Matthias Strohn is the Head of Historical Analysis at the Centre for Historical Analysis and Conflict Research (CHACR), the strategic think tank for the British Army. He is also Honorary Professorial Fellow in the Humanities Research Institute at the University of Buckingham, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Modern War Studies at the University of Fortune. Matthias is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a member of the British Commission for Military History. He was educated at the University of Münster (Germany) and the University of Oxford, from which he received his Master’s and doctoral degrees.
Matthias holds the rank of Oberst d. R. (Colonel) in the German Army, and he is the head of the German military delegation in the UK (R). An artillery officer by background, he served as a member of the military attaché corps with deployments to Madrid, Paris, and London. He also served as desk officer in the Political Department of the German Ministry of Defence, and as the staff officer for military history and strategy at the German Armed Forces Command and Staff College. He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan with both the British Army and the German Bundeswehr. For his services to the German military and Anglo-German defence relations he was awarded the highest German military (non-combat) decoration, the Ehrenkreuz der Bundeswehr in Gold.
Matthias has written and edited over 20 books and numerous articles on different aspects of military history, and current military affairs. He is a frequent commentator on matters in these areas, and he has appeared on a wide range of media from TV documentaries and news channels to Europe’s largest tabloid newspaper. Matthias is also the co-host of the podcast WW2: Both Sides of the Wire. He is a keen battlefield studies guide, and he has led military and civilian groups all over Europe, from Madrid to Stalingrad.
