Sir Winston Churchill, Walking with Destiny

Sir Winston Churchill was born on 30th November 1874 at Blenheim Palace, the stately home built by John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough on land gifted to him by the Crown after his stunning victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. Young Winston was not especially academic. After leaving school he was accepted into the Royal Military College, Sandhurst in 1893 before joining the 4th Queen's Own Hussars in 1895, acting also as a part-time reporter both while on campaign and as a civilian. In 1900 he was elected Conservative MP for Oldham before defecting to the Liberal Party four years later where he was appointed to ever-increasingly senior roles including as First Lord of the Admiralty during the early stages of the Great War. However, following the devastating Gallipoli campaign, he resigned and travel to France to join the fighting on the Western Front, attached to the British Army’s 2nd Grenadier Guards. Following the war, he returned to the Conservative Party until he lost his seat in the 1929 General Election. However, following Neville Chamberlain’s resignation as Prime Minister in 1940, Churchill was invited to lead an all-party coalition government as war raged across the continent and the world.
Churchill is remembered as a great British statesman, orator, and author who served as Prime Minister twice (in 1940-45 and 1951-55) and rallied the British people during World War II, leading his country from the brink of defeat to victory.
