In a few days you can discover the region’s wealth of military history. A number of museums, monuments and historic towns will make this a fascinating little trip. Explore the history of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth, the Arthurian legend in Winchester and the might of armoured warfare at Bovington. It’s not just military history that the region is famous for. King Alfred and Hardy’s Wessex is full of picturesque villages and towns as well as areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the New Forest and the South Downs, giving you a rich and all rounded experience in a relatively small area. The joy of doing this tour on a tailor-made basis is that you can see any of these sites in your own time or add it onto any other trip you are taking in the UK.

We generally provide accommodation in good quality 4*, preferably historic, hotels where possible. However we can provide accommodation that suits your budget, please enquire for more details.


You may choose to make this a self-drive tour or we can arrange for your expert guide to pick you up and take you from destination to destination. We can also arrange train travel for longer journeys.

Any of these sites and more can be combined to make your perfect itinerary. 


This is merely a suggested itinerary and can be tailor made to your interests and needs;

Day 1 - Southampton. Check in to your hotel for 5 nights.

Day 2 - Portsmouth. Spend the day exploring Portsmouth Historic Dockyard where you can visit the National Museum of the Royal Navy to learn about the Royal Navy’s amazing and diverse history, climb aboard Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory and visit the award-winning Mary Rose museum.

Day 3 - Winchester. Winchester’s Military Museums is a grouping of five military museums situated within yards of each other on an historic site close to the city centre of Winchester and adjacent to the Great Hall. WMM are special because of their unique displays of objects and other memorabilia associated with the history of a regiment or corps in the British Army. Visit all, or a selection of, the museums before exploring this charming market town, England’s ancient capital and former seat of King Alfred the Great. Visit the Great Hall to see the legendary Arthurian Round Table, and explore more than 1000 years of history in Europe’s longest Cathedral.

Day 4 - Salisbury. Visit the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge, the Salisbury Museum with its recently reopened Wessex Gallery displaying objects excavated from the site, and the Wardrobe Museum displaying the Collections of the Royal Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiments – a new temporary exhibition for 2016 will focus on the Battle of the Somme. Stroll around the streets of this pretty medieval city, explore Salisbury Cathedral and discover its original 1215 Magna Carta, one of only four in the world.

Day 5 - Bovington Tank Museum. The exhibitions tell the story of armoured warfare from World War One to the present day. As you explore the Museum's six large halls you will come face to face with vehicles that have seen action in all the major wars of the 20th Century and hear first-hand accounts from those who fought in them. This unique collection of over 300 vehicles is regarded as the best in the world and includes the world's first ever tank - Little Willie, the feared German Tiger tank and the modern Challenger 2.

Day 6 - Depart. Tour concludes after breakfast.
