Bespoke tour to the Ypres Salient

Bespoke tour to the Ypres Salient

Tour Introduction

The Ypres salient was one of the key areas on the western front during the First World War, with three major battles taking place there throughout the war. Home to some of the best preserved and most explored battlefields in Europe, the landscape holds the secrets of the bitter fighting and the personal stories from this bloody and arduous war. The Flanders fields battlefields are well looked after by the local authorities and tourist boards, especially in this time of the centenary commemorations. New and inventive ways of exploring the battlefields and honouring the memories of the fallen are constantly being developed, making a visit to the area an even more enriching and interactive experience year on year. Museums and war graves are dotted throughout the region to enhance the understanding of the part the salient played in the war, and of course Ypres is home to the Menin Gate and the Last Post Ceremony, a must see event when visiting the area. One of the best opportunities that exploring Flanders Fields offers is the chance to track down the grave or memorial site of a relative, something that can be easily researched and included in your desired itinerary, making it a more personal pilgrimage.
