The island of Sicily is most famous for its classical sites and works of art, but archaeological evidence shows that there was a long period of human occupation prior to its colonisation by the Greeks. This general study of the archaeology of the island begins in the Palaeolithic with early tools and rock engravings, before moving on to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. The majority of the book is inevitably occupied by the Archaic, Classical, Punic and Roman periods, and with cities, architecture, sculpture and art, burials, sanctuaries, theatres, houses and coinage. A good, general survey of the evidence which should be welcomed by all those studying the ancient Mediterranean.
