Dr Laura O'Brien
Associate Professor in Modern European History at Northumbria University
Dr Laura O’Brien is Associate Professor in Modern European History at Northumbria University. She is a specialist in the cultural, social, and political history of modern France and the history of Paris. Laura is the author of The Republican Line: Caricature and French Republican Identity, 1830-52 (2015) and her work has been published in The English Historical Review, French History, and History, among others. In 2012 she was awarded the Society for the Study of French History Article Prize. Laura’s current research includes projects on performances of Napoleon in French theatre and film; memories of revolution in nineteenth-century France; and the history of Paris as a site of revolution in the modern age.
Laura’s passion and enthusiasm for her research and teaching is also evident in her work as a public-facing scholar. In addition to publishing in Apollo, The Conversation, History Today and Times Literary Supplement, she has appeared as an expert contributor on BBC, RTÉ, France 24, and a range of historical podcasts, including the smash-hit BBC Radio 4 series You’re Dead To Me.
