Ancient board game revealed after 50-year mystery

Hundreds of small stones discovered in Akrotiri, Santorini in the 1970s have caused debate among researchers for decades. Were these Bronze Age pebbles accounting tools or weapons, perhaps? Now, a new study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports reveals them to most likely be pieces for a board game played on a stone slab with shallow dips. If this conclusion proves true, this could be one of the earliest examples of a board game and furthers our understanding of social interactions in ancient civilisation.
