Day 1: Arrival

Fly from London to Cairo airport and transfer to the Marrott Mena House hotel, Giza for 4 nights (or if making your own travel arrangements meet us at the hotel). 

Day 2: The Grand Egyptian Museum

We spend a whole day at the incredible Grand Egyptian Museum – now fully opened – and considered the largest archaeological museum on earth. Here for the first time all the tomb contents of Tutankhamun are displayed alongside an astonishing wealth of artefacts from the whole of ancient Egyptian civilisation, from the prehistoric to Roman periods. The visit is the perfect way of putting our whole trip into context and fully appreciating the astonishing legacy of this immortal civilisation. (B, L).

Day 3: The Great Pyramids of Giza and The Egyptian Museum

The day starts at the three pyramids of Giza (c.2570-2500 BC), whose enormous scale is testament to the skills of the workers who built them and lived close by. We’ll also see the Great Sphinx who has watched over this trio of royal tombs for the last four and a half thousand years while witnessing over a million and a half sunrises. We then move to the ‘old’ Egyptian Museum in central Cairo with its rich collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts many of which are seen for the first time. (B, L).

Day 4: The National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation, Old Cairo and The Coptic Museum We start the day with a visit to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation, whose Royal Mummies Gallery is home to 17 Kings and 3 Queens of Egypt, most of whom were buried in the Valley of the Kings. Here we have the privilege of a special ‘behind the scenes’ visit to gain a unique understanding of the care and preservation of artefacts. Moving on to Old Cairo we learn about the very foundation of the city by the Romans and at the Hanging Church and Ben Ezra Synagogue its later flourishing as a centre for Coptic Christianity and Judaism. Our day ends at the Coptic Museum, where we view a trove of artefacts illustrating the vibrant life of Coptic Egypt. (B, L).

Day 5: Medieval Cairo and depart

On our final day we get a taste for Egyptian history after the Pharaohs. We start with a visit to the imposing Citadel, originally built by Saladin in the thirteenth century, and centre of government for over 700 years. We then move to the Khan El Khalili bazaar where there will be opportunities to purchase souvenirs and soak up the energetic atmosphere of the city. We enjoy lunch at the Naguib Mahfouz restaurant, a tribute the famous Egyptian writer and Nobel Prize winner, where we sample sumptuous Egyptian cuisine, a perfect ending to our sojourn in this fantastic country. Depart for Cairo airport for the return flight to London unless you have made your own travel arrangements.
